Development status of polypropylene industry at home and abroad

Polypropylene has other characteristics that are not possessed by synthetic fibers and is a promising variety. The fiber has low relative density, low melting point, glass transition temperature and moisture absorption rate, high crystallinity, good chemical resistance and excellent mechanical properties. In some respects, polypropylene can replace other synthetic fibers. However, some defects in the performance of polypropylene also restrict the application in some fields. Therefore, if the advantages can be fully utilized and the shortcomings are overcome by adopting new processes and modification technologies, the future development prospects of polypropylene will be very broad.

I. Foreign polypropylene market situation In the late 1990s, the world polypropylene industry developed rapidly. Mainly the United States is developing very fast. In 1999, the world's polypropylene consumption exceeded 5.5 million tons. In 1999, the annual growth rate of polypropylene production in the world was 6%. The main production areas are the United States, Western Europe and China. The output of the three regions accounts for 62% of the world. In 2000, the production volume of developing countries began to develop, with a total output of 22,700 tons. There are more than 2,000 polypropylene production enterprises in the world, but three-thirds. The output of one is concentrated in the eight largest companies.

The application of polypropylene in Western Europe is mainly concentrated on polypropylene felt cloth, which is used for carpet base fabric. The United States is mainly used in the following six areas, namely cement and soil reinforcement; geotextiles, such as materials to prevent dams or road rail collapse; as a competitive material for acrylic fibers, used for canvas and upholstery weaving; Diapers, incontinence products; clothing materials; fibers, yarns or fabrics for export.

The main uses of polypropylene in the United States are concentrated in three main areas:
First, clothing: The American Polyolefins Association is keen to introduce the application of polypropylene in the field of clothing, in which knitted fabrics are used for sportswear, women's thin socks, and elastic pants as the mainstream; acrylic crimped yarns are used as the base yarn and polypropylene yarn. Woven uniform fabrics are also very popular, with polypropylene filaments as weft yarns and cotton as warp yarns. In 1999, the consumption of polypropylene fabrics in the United States reached 1.5 million tons. The annual growth rate of polypropylene consumption in clothing from 1999 to 2003 is expected to be 10%.

Second, interior decoration: Due to the fact that polypropylene can produce new soft fabrics in recent years, it can compete with acrylic fiber to make various decorative flannel, and can also compete with acrylic fiber to make various decorative flannel, or other The production of spun yarn fabrics by blending with synthetic fibers, coupled with the increase in the construction of new homes in the United States, the stimulation of discounted consumption, and the decoration and refurbishment of rooms and hospitals, the total consumption of indoor fabrics and blankets and carpets in 1999 reached 837,500 tons. The annual growth rate of indoor fabrics in 1998-2003 was 5%, and the production of interior decorations was mainly concentrated in 7 enterprises.

Third, non-woven fabrics: the application of polypropylene in the field of non-woven fabrics has increased since 1998, and the rapid development after 1999 is mainly due to the large replacement of polyester and viscose fibers by polypropylene new products. This application has accounted for 55% of the total non-woven fabrics, mainly diapers and adult incontinence materials, geotextiles are the second largest application area. In geotextiles, 90% use polypropylene and 10% use polyester. In geotextiles, 80% use non-woven fabrics and 20% use woven fabrics.

Nonwovens for furniture are the third largest application area for nonwovens. In this respect, polypropylene nonwovens account for 14%, mainly used for decorative fabrics and bedding, but due to the rough feel of polypropylene, it is generally used as a lining or base fabric.

Medical nonwovens are the fourth largest application area for nonwovens, with spunbonded nonwovens having 31,800 tons in 1999 and 15,900 tons of meltblown nonwovens. Polypropylene nonwovens account for 40-50% of the medical nonwovens market. The annual growth rate of consumption in 1998-2003 was 3-4%, but it was also estimated to be 1%.

In addition, nonwovens for automotive, agricultural, workwear and rags are also growing. The annual growth rate of consumption in 1998-2003 is estimated to be 4~5%.
